I hope that in one year I can go to my dream school and meet you all again in US.

My research experience at MIT

Week 1:

Day 1:First Meeting And City Tour

      Today we have the first meeting at about 5:00 in the room X, with Ellen, Cindy, Edger and Our mentors F and K. Everyone's presentation is enough to know them generally. To get more familiar with each other, we should work together for some time.

      K introduces some points in architecture and urban design such as the environment, the transportation, the landscapes, and the protection of the old buildings and the construction of new ones.  He encourages us to choose the one we like. I'm interested in the relationship between environment and buildings.

      The city tour is very fantastic. The only pity is that I can't take photos.
Beside the Charles river, K tells two stories about the John Hancock tower. On the other side of the river, he tells us that in this side the bank is lower than the opposite. A linear park is designed to make the bank more safe and environmental friendly, and provide residents a place for entertainment and relaxing. The landscape is also fantastic and special. I notice that the water in Charles river is not as clean as I thought, it's blue when looked far away but black when looked near.

      Then we turn into the blocks. The buildings here are special, with the body made by red bricks, and painted green as turquoise on the roof. The windows and doors are decorated gloriously. Every  house has a small yard. The sidewalks are special because their width is apt for human, not too narrow or too wide.

      When we turn at one corner, the buildings become uniformed, with the fields which are in front of the buildings being public areas, and there are staircases to go down and go shopping. Because of the public areas, the sidewalks look wider than the former block but actually they are the same.

      We meet the next linear park in Commonwealth Avenue. It's peaceful , regarding the noise from the roads on its sides. I think it's a successful example that our Chinese cities can learn from. Though in China, the streets are far too wider. One of the advantages of this park is, the residents living along the streets can share the park very conveniently. And by the end of the linear park is a big park. It's the biggest park in Boston. If anyone want more space for activity, he or she can go to the big park safely. And the linear park doesn't occupy the place that placed for transportation.

      There are some other kinds of old buildings on the way, but the same thing is that they are decorated gloriously. The church is like the building in the fairy tales, and some buildings prefer to carve the names of the building on eaves.

      There are so much things to think about from today's journey.

Day2: Presentation of Some Tips In Rhino

      Today the presentations by my partners strike me because of their skills in the aesthetic aspects and their perfect performance in the research.  My English and bloatwares need improving, what I said in the self-introduction.

      In the project meeting K give so many tips for us to make a simple model by Rhino, and he also gives us some methods to use Grasshopper in the urban planning.

Day3:GIS And Rhino

      Today we study how to use QGIS2.18 basically and create a map that can show the population of different towns in Massachusetts and the change of population, and also maps with other functions. It's funny and I think it can be very helpful for the analysis of use of land in specific areas.

      And we practice Rhino together and communicate with each other to know more about the operations.

Day 4& Day5 :The practice of new software

      These days we practice new skills of software like Rhino, and one of the plugins grasshopper in the series of Rhino. We also learn to use Streetlamp, Google map, Backslapper and etc. to set up the map we need.

      We will learn to create a 3D map that can be divided into different layers like buildings, green parks, water, roads and etc. It also can show the contours and the accurate height of the buildings. It will be really helpful for us to do analysis before we design.

      In addition, we do further research about the history of MIT and Harvard, and think about the reason why universities should establish their own cultures and spirits. We read two interesting passages to study the conceptions of field condition, landscape and infrastructure.

      The ability to think positively and actively is the greatest thing I learned in this week. And I enjoy the time being with my partners.

      PS: the model is just a simple one, I haven't found the right way to establish it yet, maybe I need several more hours to do it.

Day3.4.5
1. Try to learn grasshopper by watching the video.
2. Choose a site and do site analysis, just by hand drawing. Think about the problems of the site, and think about how the arising of sea level will influence the building or the site we choose,and think about the possible solutions.
3. Communicate with each other and Miss L about what we are thinking about, and she gives us special ad vices about our own subjects. My project is about an area in Chinatown, and it contain several buildings that are very crowded in the place, and include a hospital across the road. I think this site needs changing in the arrangement in buildings and the park system.

I get these ad vices:
1. To think about the difference between the lifestyle of people who live in Chinatown and in the other places in Boston.
2.To think about that I want to rebuild only one building or some of them, taking the history and function into consideration.
3. To think more about the park system and the influence of the arising of sea level.

      And I learn other useful things from others, like the great arrangement and perfect analysis of Cindy, the deep research about the sea level of Ellen, the fictional angle of Edgar, the ability of Y to analyze by studying some references very carefully and the ability of T to focus on the history.

Week 3

Day 1
1. Download the Endnote.
2. Learn how to establish my own library, including adding new references by three methods, classifying the groups of our references, searching the references online in the database in Endnote, finding the PDF files of these references directly by Endnote and etc.
F shows some basic process, and introduces the basic function of each buttons carefully to us.
3. Read some articles about the building living with water.

1. 下载Endnote。

      This week is a very important week for us all to come into a new world for landscape design and architecture redesign for the problem of sea level rising.  We work on the site analysis include the site, the scale, the sea level or the water condition, the contour line, the terrain of the land we choose, and the current buildings and facilities. Then we find problem about the site and come up with a new project that can probably solve the problem. This step maybe the most difficult but challenging. K shares many great examples of diagrams for analysis and tutorial for using professional access to do these works.

      I thought about 3 layer roof park, but the problem related to the sea level arising may appear after 50 or 100 years ago. But I think the consideration for the future is necessary. Miss L and mentor K give me some ad vices to improve the project:

1. To think about the space under the roof.
2. To think about the connection between the buildings and between buildings and surrounding, especially the park system.
3. To consider more about the influence of flood and the change of water level.
4. To think about the filter problems.

      From now I will work on those questions and draw some diagrams. But the only pity is that my computer can't install PS even after I tried for several days. So I may prepare the diagrams by other useful software and by hands.

Week 4

      This week is the last week and the most important week. We prepare our rough plan for rebuilding the site we choose, by using 5 slides.
5 slides of mine provide these information:
The location of the site I choose;
The future sea level of the site;
The contour line of the site;
The current condition of the site;
The park system around it;
The people flow and water flow;
The rough design idea;
The filter system.

      本周是最后一周,也是最重要的一周。我们用5张幻灯片准备重建我们选择的地点的粗略计划。我的5张幻灯片提供了这些信息:
我选择的站点的位置;
遗址未来的海平面;
站点的等高线;
场地现状;
围绕它的公园系统;
人流流水;
粗糙设计思想;
      K makes comment on each page and give ad vices for how we can improve it.
      Before the final presentation, we should prepare 10 slides to give a complete project .
      I think about the topic for a few days and change something. I'm very appreciate that K goes through our works and gives us very specific ideas and ad vices for our arrangement of slides and some points to make the slides look better and contain more efficient information.

      Because of my awful command of software, K encourages me to use my sketch as important part of my presentation. I'm very appreciate that K respects what I'm relatively good at.

      The final presentation is very impressive and exciting, for that everyone has very nice and interesting points. The best may be Cindy's work, for me, and for everyone. I'm very shamed because I'm a junior student but she is just a 15year old girl. At the same time, guys in our team can all be my teachers.

      My work is not very developed for the lack of filter system relating to the plants, and the function of my work should apply to the culture and people more. And maybe my work, considered the theme of sea level rising, is not very realistic.
      But the most important thing for this month is to meet excellent teachers, talented partners and great experience for my favorite field.

      I hope that in one year I can go to my dream school and meet you all again in US.
