      本文是学生在美国大学科研学习时所写的感受。学生用稚嫩的笔画,勾勒出了自己在美国大学参与科研学习的心路历程。
 
      在文章的结尾,附录学生在科研开始时的演讲,科研中聆听教授讲座的感受,和科研结束后所撰写的科研论文,供其他学生及家长参考。
 
      科研学习需要团队协作,在科研的过程中,同组另外一位女生与她一起完成的科研课题。这一过程不仅有利于科研进度的推进,也培养的学生们彼此的团队配合能力。

      Our topic is how religions and parents' education level would affect individual's tolerance. In the beginning of this week, we read more essays to decide our main topic. As we are reading through the essays, we find that the topic of our essay is too broad that it is hard for us to do research on the topic in this amount of time. As a result, we made our topic only focus on social tolerance. Then we start designing the questionnaire in order to collect data. In the questionnaire, we ask individual’s parents’ education and if they have any religions background. We design both Chinese and English version in order to collect more data and we could also compare the data between tow countries. After we send out the surveys, we meet with Professor L, and he suggest us to only focus on one kind of tolerance and we can put people into a more specific categories. As a result, we redesign the surveys and put scores on each questions so that we could get a more specific results from the surveys. This week, I also went to a lecture, and the lecture talks about how cancer are formed, detected and prevented. I think that I have a better understanding about cancer.

      This week, we mainly focus on organizing data. We collect all the data we have online and it is hard for us to see the relationship between each question. On the first two days of the week, I made two tables that sort the data into two kinds of categories: one is sorted by genders, and the other one is sorted by ages. I divided all the answers we have and put them on the table. All the questions are sorted into the table with the number of people who choose this answer. It provides us with a better view of the data we have. Then we start analyzing data. In the meeting on Tuesday, we asked the teacher’s assistant which way we can use to analyze data, and she told us that we could use excel to calculate the correlation coefficient of the data. But when it comes to actual use, we find that if we want to calculate correlation coefficient we have to have the same number of items for each question. As a result, we could not use excel to calculate the correlation coefficient. Then we thought that we could try r studio to calculate and analyze data. I watch couple YouTube tutorial video and I found that we do not have enough time for using r studio. I email the professor and he said that we could talk about this problem at yesterday’s meeting. Yesterday, the professor's assistant suggested us to change a way of analyzing data. She said that maybe we can try by calculating the means of people’s score and compare them in different categories. Therefore, in the last week of the program, we will try more ways to analyze data.

      This week I also went to two lecture. The first one is about MRI. When I am listening to the lecture, I found that it is amazing how people’s brain works and how doctors doing surgery on brain tumor. We watched a video about a musician playing her violin during the surgery in order to help doctor do the operation. Also, the technology is really important to modern people because it could provide doctors with more information to do a safer operation on patients. On Sunday, I heard the lecture about stem cells, and it is really cool that stem cells could replace different functional cells when functional cells do not perform their function. All the lectures help me have a deeper understanding of biology and recent technology, and I really thank for the time that professors take to do the lecture.

参与讲座的感受
 
      In the lecture, I learned about the level of biological organization. I learned that although the nature is complex, but it is organized in a specific way. Every step of the organization forms the next level, and they are all related with each other. From the smallest part of the atom to the Earth, everything is connected in a special way. Also, I learned the difference of living and nonliving things. Before, I just have little knowledge about the difference. Before learning about the differences, I would never think that the way we react to stimuli is one of the difference that living things have that non living things do not have. Then I learned the 11 organ system in human body and each of them have different roles. They perfectly connect and cooperate with each other and operate our daily life. At last, I learned about the organ transplant. Before, all I know is cornea transplant and I do not know how to transplant heart and lungs. This lecture help me learn a lot of things that I do not know well before, and I really appreciate the chance to be in this lecture.
