This appears to be the homework before our next session. I am trying to filter the needed variables in accordance with Loves’ literature and adjust to the availability of variables in our data set.

As a university student who just started year 3, I have not had any significant research experience before. In fact, I have applied for the Research Internship offered by Department of Statistics at LSE last summer. Unfortunately, the project accepted only 2 students and both of them were students who had already finished year 3 and hence had more knowledge and experience. Therefore, it is obvious how difficult it is for a second year undergraduate to gain hands-on research experience.

As I entered year 3 and started preparing my graduate application, the disadvantage of lacking research experience compared to my competitors that have one more year of university has begun to concern me. Research experience and ability to self-investigate and explore is the vital attribute that every top institution will be looking for. As a result, I followed the advice form my application instructor and participated in U.S.A. Research Project. The primary goal was to add the much demanded research experience to my personal statement and CV with the secondary goal to gain and learn as much as possible. However, at the end of the day, I achieved even more than I have imagined.

In the beginning of the Program. I had nearly no idea about how a research should be organized and conducted and how a academic paper should be structured and composed. Professor and I did self introduction to each other in our first session and I soon got along very well with this kind gentleman. Professor also introduced me to the Research Program, our topic Firm-level internal financing availability and investment decisions-Evidence from panel VAR and its relevant concepts and the structure of an academic paper.

For the first and also the most important part for any scientific research, data search and filtration are what Professor taught us to do. Professor asked us to try to search for adequate data sets for our research to train our ability to do so. I made use of the resources in LSE Library, a licenced data provider, Orbis, to obtain financial data for numerous Chinese firms. Professor introduced World Bank Open Data, IMF Data as the major free sources of data to us. He also showed us how to manipulate, select and drop data using Stata, as well as the codes to generate results that we want. (codes, do files, data files.)

I have got to say that U.S.A. Research Program is one of the best activities I have participated throughout my academic journey so far. I am and will remain thankful to being able to know my Professor and my colleague GT in this Program. Throughout the Program, they had to make sacrifice for me due to the time difference between the two country, as well as Internet connection glitches as we had to use video call to communicate. Thanks to the experience and stories shared by my Professor, I have steeled my resolve to pursue my academic journey and try my best to get into top universities in the US.

In the phase research on relationship between investment level and financial constraints, he was engrossed into more in-depth logic of how to put theories into practical cases, and applied VAR to evaluate the relationship between different variables in time series.
